Pin sat at his desk, frantically scribbling away in his planner.

“No, no, no!” He ripped his latest notes out of the book, crumpling the paper into a ball and hurling it across the room. “It’s not perfect. It has to be perfect!”

He clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth, adjusting his chair to correct an imaginary problem, before crouching over his notebook to attempt yet another version of his speech to Pae.

Without warning, his door slammed open, and Gord stepped in.

“What is the meaning of this?” Pin angrily exclaimed. “You know full well that my chambers are sacrosanct. I should have you imprisoned for this insolence.”

“We need to talk about the Bruard, and the events that have brought him here,” Gord said, bluntly. “I want to know why you misled me about the purpose of our mission in Meroe.”

“This insubordination really won’t do,” snapped Pin. “I expect better from my closest comrade and supporter. You are meant to obey my orders without question – and that includes after the fact. I didn’t tell you about what was going on in Meroe because you didn’t need to know. You still don’t. You’re here to act as my bodyguard, not my advisor. That was Rim’s job, and we both know how that turned out.”

Gord kicked shut the door behind him, and stalked over to Pin’s desk. He slammed his fists down, looming over his boss.

“As your closest comrade and supporter, you know that I would never betray you. You need to trust me. I may be the muscle, but I’m not stupid, and I’m sick of running blind. I have to know what you’re planning. What’s the end game here? What are we trying to achieve?”

Pin sighed, and put down his pen. “Insolence aside, I see Pae’s visit’s got you rattled,” he observed.

“Can you blame me?” snorted Gord. “The Bruard making a personal visit is never a good sign. You can’t tell me that he’s coming all this way just to pat you on the back and tell you ‘good job.’ We’re in trouble, and I don’t know if your silver tongue can talk us out of it. He’s coming to make an example of us. Who knows whether we’ll survive his being here?”

“Never underestimate my abilities,” Pin reminded his friend. “I’m sure that once Pae sees everything I’ve achieved for him, he’ll appreciate that I only have the best interests of the Bruard Empire at heart. Sure, I’ve been a little creative in how I’ve interpreted his orders, but the end justifies the means. All will be forgiven, you wait and see.”

“But you know Pae.” Gord shook his head, dubious that Pin could be right. “He’s paranoid enough at the best of times. He’s not going to appreciate you going rogue, especially not with the delicate international situation. For all you know, he’s been looking for an excuse to execute a high ranking official to send out a signal to the rest of his supporters. You’ve handed your head to him, all laid out on a nice silver platter.
